The Why Behind Flora's Walk

Caitlin Slavens

At 3:00 a.m., she’s wide awake. Her baby finally drifted off twenty minutes ago, but her heart is still pounding. She’s not sure why. She scrolls through her phone, typing, “Why am I so angry after having a baby?” and then quickly deletes it. Who can she even tell this to?

If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Postpartum anxiety and postpartum depression affect so many parents—and yet they’re still wrapped in silence, shame, or brushed off as just part of the new mom fog. But here in Lethbridge, something is shifting. Parents, professionals, and the community are coming together to change the story—and this year, Couples to Cradles Counselling is walking to prove it.

The Stats No One Wants to Talk About—But We Need To

We talk a lot about baby gear. Sleep schedules. Feeding. But what about the mental health of the person who just gave birth?

In Canada:

  • Up to 23% of postpartum parents experience clinical depression.
  • Over 1 in 3 report anxiety symptoms.
  • Many never get help because they fear judgment or don’t know where to turn.

And here's the part that hits hardest: the leading cause of maternal death in the first year after childbirth is suicide.

Let that sit for a moment. This isn’t about being “overwhelmed.” This is about survival.

The Story Behind Flora’s Walk

Flora didn’t get the help she needed in time. Her mother, Ariana, turned unimaginable grief into a movement: Flora’s Walk. What started as one family’s way to honour their daughter has grown into a nationwide initiative to raise awareness and funds for perinatal mental health support.

It’s a walk, yes—but it’s also a statement. A gathering of parents, professionals, and supporters saying loudly: Postpartum mental health matters. Every single life matters.

And this year, Lethbridge is walking, too.

Why We’re Walking in Lethbridge

At Couples to Cradles Counselling, this isn’t just a cause we care about—it’s personal. We’re mothers. We’re psychologists. We’re survivors of hard postpartum seasons. And we’ve walked alongside countless families in those first tender months and years.

This year, we’re not just talking about change—we’re hosting our own Flora’s Walk right here in Lethbridge. Alongside local doulas, perinatal specialists, and mental health professionals, we’re stepping forward together.

We’re walking for the parents who feel invisible. For the ones who’ve been told “it’s just the baby blues.” For Flora.

What Help Can Look Like

If you’re struggling, know this: it doesn’t have to get worse before you get help. Therapy for postpartum anxiety and postpartum depression can be life-changing. At Couples to Cradles Counselling, our team includes therapists with specialized training in perinatal mental health who offer both in-person counselling in Lethbridge and virtual sessions across Alberta.

We get that it's hard to reach out. That's why we offer free 20-minute consultations—just to talk. No pressure. No judgment. Just someone who gets it.

Let’s Walk for Her—and for Each Other

Postpartum mental health shouldn't be an afterthought. Not in our families. Not in our city. Not in our healthcare system.

So we’re walking—for Flora, for every parent who’s ever felt alone, and for a future where support is the norm, not the exception.

And if you need that support now? We’re here. Really here.
