Child Therapy FAQs

How do I know if my child needs counselling?

Children do not always say, “I’m anxious” or “I’m struggling.” Sometimes it shows up as meltdowns, anger, stomachaches, sleep changes, school refusal, clinginess, sadness, withdrawal, low confidence, friendship stress, or behaviour that seems out of character.

Child counselling may help if your child seems overwhelmed, stuck, more emotional than usual, or if you are not sure how to support them at home. A child therapist can help you understand what may be underneath the behaviour and what your child may need next.

What is child counselling?

Child counselling gives children a safe place to work through feelings, worries, behaviour challenges, family changes, and stressful experiences.

Because children do not always process things by sitting and talking the way adults do, therapy often includes play, art, games, stories, movement, and practical skill-building. The goal is to help children understand themselves, build coping tools, and feel more supported at home, school, and in relationships.

What is play therapy?

Play therapy uses a child’s natural language: play.

Children often show us what they are feeling through toys, games, drawings, stories, and imagination before they can explain it in words. In play therapy, the therapist uses those moments to help the child express emotions, process hard experiences, practice coping skills, and build confidence.

What ages do you provide child counselling for?

We provide child counselling for a range of ages, depending on the child’s needs and the therapist’s areas of experience.

During a free consultation, we can talk through your child’s age, personality, concerns, and what kind of therapist may be the best fit. Some children need a play-based approach, while others do well with more direct skill-building and conversation.

What issues can child counselling help with?

Child counselling can support children with:
-Anxiety
-ADHD
-Anger and emotional regulation
-Big feelings and meltdowns
-Low self-esteem
-School stress
-Bullying
-Friendship challenges
-Family changes, including divorce or separation
-Grief and loss
-Trauma
-Sibling conflict
-Behavioural concerns
-Parent-child relationship stress

How long does child counselling take?

There is no one-size-fits-all timeline. Some children benefit from short-term support focused on one concern, while others need longer-term therapy to build emotional regulation, confidence, coping skills, or process more complex experiences.

Your therapist will talk with you about goals, progress, and what ongoing support may look like.

Will parents be involved in the counselling process?

Yes. Parent involvement is often an important part of child counselling.

Depending on your child’s age and needs, your therapist may include parent check-ins, parenting strategies, parent-child sessions, or updates about themes and tools being used in therapy. Children still need privacy in the therapy room, but parents should not feel left in the dark.

What happens during a child’s first counselling session?

The first session is about helping your child feel comfortable and giving the therapist a better understanding of what has been going on.

The therapist may ask about your child’s strengths, worries, behaviour, family life, school, friendships, and goals for therapy. With younger children, the session may include play, drawing, or games so the child does not feel pressured to talk the whole time. Sessions are adapted to each child’s age and needs, using approaches such as play therapy, creative activities, practical skill-building, and talk therapy for older children and teens.

Can counselling help children with anxiety?

Yes. Child counselling can help children understand their worries, notice body clues, build coping skills, and practice brave steps in a way that feels manageable.

Therapy may also include parent support, because anxious children often need help at home with reassurance, routines, avoidance, bedtime worries, school stress, and building confidence.

Can counselling help with ADHD?

Yes. Counselling can support children with ADHD by helping with emotional regulation, frustration tolerance, self-esteem, social skills, routines, and coping with everyday demands.

Therapists may also work with parents on practical strategies for home and school, especially when ADHD shows up as big emotions, impulsivity, task avoidance, or conflict around expectations.

Is play therapy effective?

Play therapy can be very helpful for children because play is one of the main ways children communicate, learn, and process experiences.

For many kids, toys, games, art, and stories make it easier to express feelings that would be hard to explain directly. Play therapy can support emotional regulation, confidence, coping, behaviour, and relationships.

How can I prepare my child for their first counselling appointment?

Keep it simple and reassuring. You might say:

“You’re going to meet someone who helps kids with big feelings, worries, friendships, and hard things. You can talk, play, draw, or just get to know them.”

Try not to frame counselling as something they need because they are “bad” or “in trouble.” The goal is for your child to feel supported, not fixed.

Is everything my child says confidential?

Your child’s privacy is respected in counselling. The therapist will explain confidentiality to both you and your child in an age-appropriate way.

Parents are still involved, especially around goals, safety, and support at home. There are also limits to confidentiality when there are safety concerns, such as risk of harm to self or others.
